Shaldon Zoo
Shaldon Zoo has rare and protected species and is within walking distance of Yannon Towers. Highly recommended as it's only quite small and quick to see.
If you like dolphins you can go on boat trips and spot them! The trips are very cheap and a good experience. They go past the Ness beach and far enough so you can see Torquay Beach. The views are very satisfying.
Torbay including Torquay, Paignton and Brixham
In Torbay there are many attractions; one of the top attractions, Quay West, is Britain's biggest water park. It is next to Goodrington beach where you can go water skiing, hire pedalloes, bumper boats and many other things. The water park itself has over one mile of slides including The Devils Drop which is a 65ft freefall with a black hole run out! The water is heated to 80 degrees F and there is also an area to relax and areas for small children to paddle in safety.
Paignton zoo is just one mile from Paignton town centre and is home to many wild animals and endangered species; it is a great family day out that everyone will enjoy.
Kents cavern is a maze of caves that were formed over 350,000 years ago; it is an interesting experience that could teach you a lot about the history of the area.
Babbacombe model village is a minute village that comes complete with boats, trains, people and even burning houses. This is a great family experience especially if you have young children.
Dawlish Warren go-karts and nature reserve
The Dawlish Warren beach is a major tourist attraction because it has a lot to offer. For example it has softer sands, is a very good family beach, is close to a nature reserve and has attractions including go-karts and various other rides. There is also a large arcade with lots of machines.
Shopping in Exeter
Shopping in Exeter is a great day out. There are many shops including Dingles, Marks and Spencers, as well as shops appealing to teenagers, such as Fat Face. Close to the shopping centre is Exeter cathedral. The shopping centre is very close to the train station and there are regular trains. There is a van that sells pancakes in the shopping centre that you simply must try!
Dartmoor National Park
There are many walks around the area, all of which have fantastic views and scenery. The most popular walks are on Dartmoor which is about 1hr away.
Some of the most popular destinations on Dartmoor are 'Merrivale Stone Row', 'Wheal Betsy', 'Moorland Moonlight', 'Dartmoor Ponies', 'Childe's Tomb', 'Meldon Reservoir', 'Postbridge', 'Birch Tor', 'Bowermans Nose', 'Belstone Tor', 'Fingles Bridge' and 'Haytor'. All of these can be found in a leaflet which is available in the Tourist Information Centre in Teignmouth if there isn't one in the house.
Woodlands in Dartmoor is a great day out for all the family; there is 60 acres of action and indoor fun, including a 5 storey building with a large play area inside. There are waterslides, toboggan runs, death drop slides and much more. There are also smaller rides for younger children.
The River Dart Adventures at Ashburton is great for families with children of the age 4-14; there are lots of things to do such as 'the tree rope challenge', indoor climbing areas, zip wires, a lake with obstacle courses and a pirate ship.
Easy and advanced climbing on the Tors of Dartmoor
Spitwich is a great day out; there is a river with rapids to slide down and walk up, a rope swing over water, a large grass area for picnics and a large cliff that you can jump off into deep water! It's good for family day outs but beware of the ants in some areas.
Local theatres
The Princess Theatre in Torquay is a great place to see shows. There are many to choose from and all are of a very high standard. Most of the shows will be suitable for all the family to enjoy; there are also many good restaurants near by. Or if you want somewhere closer there is the Carlton Theatre in Teignmouth which has a very high standard of good value amateur shows, Teignmouth Players have won several national awards. These shows will be cheaper and although set standards may not be as high as at the Princess Theatre, the Teignmouth theatre has a lovely atmosphere and you always sit close to the action.

There are also many cycling routes in and around Teignmouth, most of which are very steep but have good views and scenery to make it enjoyable. There are many places around where you can hire bikes so if you've forgotten yours don't worry!

There are many old buildings and castles in the area that are open to the public, one being Powderham Castle; it has many decorative rooms and there are also many events going on around the castle such as deer park safari's and concerts with various entertainers such as Busted, Blue, Tom Jones, Will Young and Westlife!
Another is Castle Drogo which also has various events such as coffee mornings, art shows and circus skills workshops.
There are many walks around closer areas as well and most of them end at a good pub that serve excellent Sunday lunches.
